I have just bought the Behringer BCA2000 Audio/Midi Interface and
since I installed the drivers, I am facing strong problems with my windows XP stability: system freezes totally and I have to reset the computer manually (no access to Task Mgr). I can't use the BCA2000 at all, even for a single song playback. After many attempts to make it work on my computer, I finally re-started from the beginning: * I removed my former soundcard from the computer * I format the HDD, re-installed Windows Xp Pro with SP1 & KB822603 * Installed drivers for my NVidia GeForce4 MX * Installed drivers for my dual Firewire+USB2 PCI Card * then installed the latest drivers for the BCA (and followed closely the instructions provided in Driver_Install_1_9_7_2_beta.pdf) * After reboot, the control panel of the BCA loaded normally & I raised the latency to max. value (as suggested on Behringer website), I also checked that option "Use only prefered devices" was NOT selected (control panel - sounds, audio and MIDI devices** - audio) ) * After that, I simply tried to browse my C: drive in an Explorer - system froze - manual reboot necessary (can't even open Task Manager). Many attempts, same behaviour each time : can't explore any folder on my HDD. In this configuration, the BCA was plugged on the USB2 port of a PCI card (my Motherboard only has USB1 integrated - see specs below). After that, I tried to plug it on the USB1 port on the motherboard: I faced fewer problems: system was dead slow and simple playback of MP3 was awful but it didn't totally freeze as on the USB2 port. Here is my configuration: MB: ABIT KT7 - VIA chipset - Socket A CPU: AMD ATHLON 800Mhz (overclocked -- 1.0 Ghz : very stable at this speed) RAM: 640MB (128MB+512MB) OS: WinXp Pro + SP1 + KB822603 GFX: NVidia Geforce4 MX IDE: 0 - Master: IBM 40GB HDD 0 - Slave: Maxtor 60GB HDD (contains the Windows used in this case) 1 - Master: Pioneer DVD-105S 1 - Slave: Dual Layer DVD+-RW (brand?) PCI: * Ethernet Card 3com * Dual USB2 (2 ports) + Firewire (2 ports) : no brand, VIA chipset & DMA is activated I know a CPU speed of 1.2 GHz is recommended in the manual but I guess a simple MP3 playback should work fine at 1.0Ghz. Is the VIA chipset uncompatible? (Intel recommended in docs) Is it due to the PCI USB2 card? (I could buy another one but would it solve the issue? Performance are bad on integrated USB1 as well). Any help would be appreciated, I was expecting a lot of pleasure with this interface but since now, I can't get a single sound out of it. Thx. |

I can't use the BCA2000 at all, even for a single song playback. I've managed to duplicate most if not all of these symptoms with a variety of PCs, and I didn't even need a BCA2000. I manage to do it quite simply with my "Super Talent" and "Lexar JumpDrive" USB flash drives. The common thread appears to be USB 2.0 devices that actually try to exploit the speed potential of the standard. Note, that I've used other USB 2.0 devices such as a external hard drive in the same contexts without a hitch. One sure recipe for disaster seems to be to use front-panel USB jacks. In many cases simply shifting to the rear-panel jacks is enough to effect a fix. In other cases the problem seems to be the USB interface. One of the problematical USB interface chips seems to be Via, but not all implementations of that chip are equally problematical. Some work great. I suspect that maybe circuit board layout is part of the situation. In one case I moved a PC from "Mission Impossible" to "Works like a champ" by simply replacing the internal wiring to the front panel jack with a standard off-the-shelf USB extension cable. I ripped out the existing jack and carefully hot-melt glued the new female jack into the now-gaping hole in the front panel. I routed the other end of the cable through the back panel and plugged it into one of the USB jacks there. In other cases I simply went back to my parts box and picked a different USB 2.0 card. |

If you have run out of things to try, have you considered setting your PC type to 'Standard PC' rather than 'ACPI Computer' in the device manager? In Win2000 I simply had to select the 'Computer' entry in the device manager and choose the 'update driver' button in the 'drivers' tab. Following a reset, most of my devices had to be redetected and I had to manually re install a couple of drivers. Do it at your own risk but it /seems/ to have resolved some audio/video performance related problems that I was having with this 2000 install. It also seems to have solved DAW orientated problems for other people in the past. Software power control doesn't seem to work now and I have switch off the power manually. I would suspect that other power management features may well be non functioning now. -- ***My real address is m/ike at u/nmusic d/ot co dot u/k (removing /s) np: http://www.unmusic.co.uk http://www.unmusic.co.uk/amh-s-faq.html - alt.music.home-studio FAQ http://www.unmusic.co.uk/wrap.php?file=vhs.html - vhs purchase log. |

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are having with the BCA2000. Yes, the VIA chipset is a known compatibility problem. In addition, I think the beta driver you are trying to install was specifically written for Win XP with SP2. I'll be happy to send you the latest beta if you would like to try it, but you will definitely need to update to SP2 first. Just drop me a line and I'll send it by email. Thanks a lot for your answer.
I noticed I could listen to Mp3 or wav with Winamp or Windows Media Player for a few seconds then sound stops (with USB1 connection). I would be glad to test your new beta drivers. Could you send it to this email address? (note that .exe, .zip & .rar files are not allowed so you might have to modify the extension) Thanks. About the VIA incompatibility, would the problem come from the chipset on the motherboard or on the USB2/Firewire PCI card? (both have VIA chipset) The answer to my question provided on the Behringer website was that my CPU speed was too low (1Ghz, 1.2Ghz required) so I tried to overclock it a bit more to 1.2Ghz (temperature is OK) but no major changes. Best regards, Yannick. |

More info:
after having modified the BIOS this way: (I have a USB2/Firewire PCI Card) DISABLE: CPU to PCI Write Buffer DISABLE: PCI Master 0 WS Write DISABLE: PCI Master Read Caching ENABLE: PCI Delay Transaction my system does not totally freeze anymore when BCA2000 is connected on USB2 port (though it is very slow). Don't know if that could be a clue... |

I followed all the instructions provided,
installed win xp with SP2, followed all the tips provided on http://www.musicXP.net/tuning_tips.php (links provided in "The BEHRINGER Guide to USB2.doc", for "some particularly relevant help with optimising your Windows® XP system for music purposes"). My system was totally clean, no internet connection (SP2 was integrated in the windows installation). I installed the latest drivers Behringer sent me and connected the BCA2000 on the USB2 port (on the PCI card): the system didn't freeze anymore as with the former version BUT it is still not usable at all : each time the computer has to play any sound, it slows down incredibly (for instance: it takes about 10 seconds for a single mouse movement). I set my CPU speed to 1.2Ghz (temperature carefully checked) but same results. I am getting desperate, will I need to buy a new motherboard and CPU to use the BCA2000? Should I change my USB2 PCI card? Should I bring the BCA2000 back to my dealer? Any help appreciated, |

I'm considering one of these BCA2000 devices, and I've read in a couple
of different places on the net that you're meant to use Intel m/boards with these, not AMD. I emailed Behringer support and asked them, and they wrote back and said that was correct -- AMD is not supported or recommended as yet, but possibly in the future -- which I took to mean pending a driver update. |

Hell, I'd better tell my BCF that - until now it's been working quite happily. Hell - it's just a USB device. Not like you plug it into the mobo. Not comparable. BCA is an audio device, BCF is a midi device, which do not
require lots of bandwith. BCA pushes the USB limit. Toby "Geoff Wood" wrote in message ... "dminoz" wrote in message oups.com...
