I need a recording of people applauding, just applauding none of the big
concert screaming etc. Is there anything I could get online as a free download? I don't need much maybe 5-6 different types of applauds with different reactions. Also how can I make a spoken voice sound as if it was coming over the telephone? Thanks IS |

The search is nice too because you can search by sample rate, bit rate, size, etc. There's also www.soundrangers.com. This is a pay-per-sound site but it has this flash setup where you can move the mouse over little orange triangles next to the sounds in the listings and it plays it over the computer. You can't download the flash sounds but if you have something like wiretap (www.ambrosiasw.com) that records all audio coming out of your computer and saves it as an aiff file, you can grab the sounds easily. Of course the sounds are slightly downgraded in quality from the actualy pay-file (it's hard to tell with some but I think they add a little bit of white noise around 2.5khz). But if you aren't too picky, I think most of them will sound fine for you. I use them all the time. Also how can I make a spoken voice sound as if it was coming over the telephone? Use an equalizer. Cut out almost all frequencies below 400-500 hertz, and almost all frequencies above 3000-3500 hertz. Vary the frequencies as necessary for your mix, but usually I use a sharp high pass at 450hz and a sharp lowpass at 3.5khz. Then add a LOT of compression. I rarely give phone voiceovers any dynamic range, because you rarely hear any on actual phones. Thanks IS No problem.--Matt |

I also find that, if you can, adding a slight distortion effect to the
voice really compliments the equalizer nicely for a good phone sound.--Matt |

If you do a lot of this, it might be worth it to buy one of their CDs. Also how can I make a spoken voice sound as if it was coming over the telephone? With a telephone line simulator box. I have one around here somewhere. Basically it's a combination of bandlimiting and distortion, and the bandlimiting should preferably be done with something like a mechanical filter that rings like hell. You could probably simulate it with an equalizer and a distortion pedal or a slightly overloaded input stage. Just add a little distortion in, not too much. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. OTOH, you can poke around my favorite online SFX vendor www.sounddogs.com and likely find exactly what you want and quite reasonable prices (a very few bucks per cut). You can pay and download right online. Instant (and legal) gratification. Also how can I make a spoken voice sound as if it was coming over the telephone? Bandwidth limit it by rolling off everything below 300Hz and above 3KHz. Add significant distortion (I'd start with 10%) to taste. Add some white noise in the background and whatever other things you need for the effect you seek. |
