A strange paradox, though: if you're in a noisy environment with a loud source, you'll get less background noise if you use the consumer level (+4 dbU will make a nearby computer sound like a helicopter!). That's not a paradox, that's an indication that you don't have a handle on the gain staging in your system. Feed your recorder a signal at 10dBV, then feed it the same signal at +4dBm. You'll get an increase in level of almost 12dB.
