Default AT 4060 Modification

I've read posts over the years about modifying the AT4060. I was wondering
what these does to the microphone.

I recently acquired a 16 channel Hill multimix board. As of now, phantom
power has to be supplied via 5 9V batteries in series... ick.

So would any old 48V DC power supply suit my needs for dedicated phantom
power? Does anyone out there use this mixer and have a phantom power
supply connected? If so, what do you use?

Yes. Audio_Technica AT8801 is a decent single-channel phantom power
supply.

Do you want to add a "master" phantom power supply to all the inputs,
or just replace your batteries with a single outboard supply?

"any old" 48V DC power supply isn't very specific. Since 48V supplies
aren't all that common (though definitely available) it's not likely
that you'll find an old one lying around in a junk pile or auction
lot. It needs to be pretty clean and quiet DC, delivering at least
10 mA of current for every mic you plan to use. That's not a lot for
for a dedicated linear or switching supply, about 10 watts total for
your 16-channel console, but more never hurts. If you build it in,
you'll also need some 6.8K resistors (two per channel) which should be
at least 1% tolerance, and matched closer than that in pairs if you
want to do it right.

Different subject, but it changes it, of course. Depends on what
modification you do. What have you read and where have you read it? I
suppose that any microphone can be improved (or not) with some sort of
modification but I haven't read anything specific about this series.

I'd like it to be a tad clearer.

.... O;-) ....

Get a new housing for it in the General Products hull material, it is
completely transparent and not ever shown to be breakable. Just get in
touch with Larry Niven, I think he knows the vendor.

.... O;-) ....

Kind regards

If 'clarity' is a problem, I think that the best mod for a 4060 would be a
new performer, microphne, or an improved preamp.

Or have them step back to a distance of 12 inches.

PS: The AT4060 is a remarkably clear sounding mic already.

Not quite indestructible, as you probably remember... (Beowulf had to sign
an NDA, but you know how enforceable THEY are...)

My experience with the 4060 is the top end is "clear" to the point of
being artificial and exaggerated.

That's not been my experience. It sounded almost translucent; like passing
through distilled water. Maybe, again, PREAMP MATCHING.
