Default speaking of mobile recording...

I'll have a Powerbook/Digi 002 Rack mobile recording combo soon and I
was thinking that it would be cool to go camping sometime and do some
recording in the deep dark woods. Has anyone powered this setup (or
something simlar) using a 12V cigarette lighter inverter?

It's $25 CAD for 300W and that would do I imagine. I'll defintely put
another surge protector between that and the laptop though.

Any advice/lessons learned from this experience?

Cheap inverters are major noise sources. Cheap inverters have really
bad waveforms and radiate RF trash all over the place. Good clean
inverters are sadly very expensive.

Agreed. You'd be best served with a Firebox or a Firepod on a pair of 12V
SLA batteries (like car batteries but can be found much smaller).

Still, apart from making for a good SUV commercial, what actual benefits
does that sort of recording offer over just a portable DAT or similar unit
under those circumstances? You don't actually expect to use the takes!
You're just going to get some cables dirty.
