Default Small mic for field recording?

I'm looking for a small stereo mic to do field recordings, sampling, and
some occasional bootlegging into my laptop or a minidisc recorder.

Right now I use an Audio Technica AT-822 and I am quite happy with the
result, but it requires me to lug around a preamp or small mixing
console to get a hot signal.

Can you recommend any similar quality stereo microphones that DON'T
require preamplification? The smaller the better, as I would like to
store it permanently in my laptop case so I can whip it out on a
moment's notice.

I'm looking for a reasonably professional mic, not a consumer brand
get-it-at-Best-Buy sort of deal. The AT822 is my benchmark, since the
new mic will be replacing it.

Thanks,
chris.

No such thing. Some very high sensitvity omni's can drive
line in if the sound levels are high enough but that's a
pretty limiting set of conditions.

One problem with an integrated mic-pre is gain control based
on source sound level. It must be variable.

I've seen people bootleg concerts with nothing but a minidisc recorder
and a mic in their laps... no preamp or anything... and i used to know
a guy who walked around with a DAT recorder to sample street sounds for
his music... what are they using?

thanks,
chris.

I use the M-Audio Mobile Pre on my laptop. It's USB powered and very small
and light. It even has Phantom power for condenser mics. It should work well
with your AT822.

Many minidisc recorders and most portable DAT recorders have built-in
pre-amps. Anything that has a microphone input jack has a preamp as a
general rule.

The godawful internal preamps on the minidisc, and -- presumably -- the
godawful internal mics and preamps on the DAT recorder. Assuming he wasn't
using mics, of course. If he was, then he was using the probably-godawful
internal preamps on the DAT machine.

Peace,
Paul

Um, excuse me sir, how would you describe the ideal woman?

what are they using?

More to the point, what are you using, and does it have a preamp?
One other option would be to replace whatever you're using with
something that does have a preamp.

A minidisc recorder with a preamp built-in. Usually a pretty crappy
preamp with an unbalanced input, but they're going into a mike in rather
than a line in.

Instead of buying another mic, you should buy a small portable preamp. I've
used the Denecke AD-20 and have been happy with it, but now I'm using the
Core Sound Mic2496 (www.core-sound.com). They also sell the Denecke, and
other less expensive preamps. They are about the size of a pack of
cigarettes, so they don't add much to the footprint of your recorder. They
also use the digital input of your minidisc recorder, bypassing the crappy
A/D converter and the crappy preamp. You'll be amazed at the difference in
quality.

However, if you want portable mics, check with www.soundprofessionals.com,
or Core Sound.

Seconded!

Our CS Binaurals are a good upgrade to the AT822. And they plug
directly into the M-Audio MobilePre USB without adapters.
