Default Cannot record from a microphone

Hi,
I'm trying to connect a vocal microphone to my computer
( I've got SI 7078 sound card and win XP) and I'm not able to record
anything. I tried 'Speech recognition', 'Sound Recorder ' with no luck
I tried the same mic on Win 2000 on another computer and it works .The
only weird thing I noticed that there is no 'Microphone' option under
'Recording' in 'Volume Control'
(only 'Hall','Pub' etc..)
but there is a 'Microphone' option in 'Others-Recording Device' .Does
it mean anything? Any ideas?
Thanks

to start with you need to make sure you have the recording option set to
microphone. So in this other recording devices select microphone.

Are you using a particular type of microphone. A condensor that requires
phantom power or anything like that?

but why does it work on win 2000?

There have been significant changes to the OS sound subsystem from
Win2k to WinXP. Some but not all XP *upgrades* were retrofitted to
Win2K.

This may be a dumb question, but you aren't running a laptop that has
only a line level input, are you?

I have heard that the latest versions of Windows will sense the signal
level on a laptop and automatically switch a 20 db attentuator out when
you use a mike. Is this correct?
