Has anyone seriously A/B'd the REV-5 and 7...? Yes, but it was back when the REV5 first came out 15 or 20 years ago, and I don't think I've heard the two side by side since then...so take any of my conclusions with a big grain of salt. A really big grain. IIRC, the REV5 had smoother tails, less grainy & metallic with a slightly better sense of depth. But it was still unmistakably a Yamaha, which to me has always meant slightly grainy and slightly metallic without an extremely convincing sense of depth. IOW, it was a more polished turd. Now, for the right price I wouldn't turn my nose up at any Yamaha 'verb. It's a distinctive sound that I've found lots of uses for, especially on drumkits. But I can't imagine getting too excited about any of them, especially one as old as a REV5 or a REV7. So to me the notion of an "upgrade" for the REV7 involves trading it in for a different box! |

And I have to say, it's 80% "there"... I love the front panel... Love the ER/1, the plates are perfectly usable, the Halls are very "Yamaha" indeed (but I never use Halls so no prob). I could do with a bit more "zing" though, smoother tails wouldn't hurt either. From the specs, looks like the REV-5 would do the trick - a Goolge search seems to confirm this. The 5's front panel is not as "reverb oriented" as the 7 though. Still much better than a Lex pcm70... But my REV-7 is a V 1.00 and I wonder if upgrades were ever available. The Rev 7 was the first decent reverb I used in Productions, I still like it. I do have a Rev 7 and have used the Rev 5, the Rev 5 sounds better and has some new chained/new effects presets that are good improvements/updates, like a couple of the gated reverb presets. All things being equal I'd say buy the Rev 5, but I still like both units better than Yamaha SPX90/SPX90II's of the same vintage, which tend to be hissy IMO. I tried to Email Jim Williams about possible upgrades but I get a "failure notice" message back... Has anyone seriously A/B'd the REV-5 and 7, or has anyone upgraded the REV-7 to a "better" software or whatever? Thanks in advance; JP If you like the 330..you may like a used R-880 very much. I had one for a year and the verbs sounded extremely "real"..meaning familiar and consistent with what I have heard on recordings that I really like. |
