Hi, I just bought a Behringer Ultra-DI Pro DI800 and it seems to work
really well (much better frequency response than the passive DI's we were using). As well as the low impedance XLR output, it has 2 quarter inch outputs, one is called the "link" connector which is an unbalanced parallel output, the other is called the "unbalanced out" connector which seems to be just the unbalanced input signal. The manual says to use the "link" connector when connecting to (say) a monitor amp, but under what circumstances would you want to use the unbalanced out connector? Why is it there, and when should you use which output? Thanks Andrew |

The DI800 is a swiss army knife intended for those doing live sound
work. I frequent a place that has two of them on stage to receive all sort of mic and line signals, get them up to a nice line level, lift any grounds needing lifting (building had okay safety grounds but lousy grounds for quiet audio) and send the signal into a patch panel. From there, the signal went to the stage mixer, foh mixer (along a treacherous bank of flourescents and dimmer circuits), and to a nearby recording desk (2 Echo Laylas). Many of the performances had only 5-10 minutes to setup and play. Of course getting a good signal to the FOH mixer took priority and the signal to the recorder was secondary. Gain structure was never ideal but it worked. At the recording desk, I'd often have trouble with signalsrarely where I wanted them and often either pegging into the red or barely detectable. While the recording desk originally was fed from the patch panel, I found tapping off either the link (level same as what the instrument/mic preamp provides) or the unbalanced out (boosted and/or padded), gave me for flexibility and was able to make gross level adjustments to better feed the Laylas. Wasn't perfect but got alot of useable material that way. HTH, Andy |
