One of the things that attracted me to this MOBO is the separate LINE
IN and line out connectors. The controls complexity, however, is driving me bat****. I'm running WXP with all the latest service packs and patches, and I've got the NVIDIA drivers loaded for the ALC850, rev. 6.14.460.0 2 problems: PROBLEM ONE I can record just fine (sort of, see problem two) in Cool Edit Pro. I can't play anything back. The saved files work ok on WMP10. I've tried all the obvious things with NVMixer &/or Windows Master Volume Control (for example, WAVE is enabled and volume is up.) It does nothing. Nada. Zip. PROBLEM TWO The line out level from my hi fi preamp overloads the LINE IN on the sound chip. I've got the Realtek ALC850 record level turned all the way down, and I still get occasional clips. I know the problem is not with the preamp because I've used this setup with my older systems, and all was just peachy. Interesting to note that the Realtek ALC850 hardware specs say that the LINE IN 1.6 VRMS. It doesn't seem to be the case. @@@@@@@@@ Suggestions? Thanks. pc |

Well have you actually measured the output voltage from your preamp? Both of
your problems might come from that. Did the first problem show up before or after you plugged in your preamp? Chip might be toast if you're really unlucky. Also check the mobo connectors, while they are practical, sometimes they are hard to connect properly. Are you trying to playback while you are recording? If so it might be that the sound chip, probably AC97, isn't full duplex capable. That means that you can only listen OR record, not do both at the same time. Hope that helps... The preamp output worked with other computers just fine. It is a Soundcraftman preamp. I'm using the same cable. I suppose I may have to actually check the levels with a scope, but I doubt that 's the problem. The sound chip has 4 DACS and an ADC, but the problem isn't one of hearing while recording -- that works OK, probably because I'm hearing the LINE IN. Problem ONE is that the files just won't play in Cool Edit Pro. When not recording. Program behaves normally otherwise. On play when not recording, no sound - lots of program activity, waveform scrolls by, etc., but no sound. The same files play fine in WMP10. |

Ooops my bad, didn't realize the problem was localized to cool edit.

I had to do that the other day with one of my PCs that I had connected to my Laptop for recording some DMR .WMAs to .WAVs. WMP9 kept trashing the audio drivers for my onboard VIA AC97 sound chip. -- Chas. (Drop spamski to E-mail me) |

It helps to remember that in most motherboard manual connection layouts that the image is upside down from the way it gets installed in the case. WRONG OUPUTS. We'll address PROBLEM TWO after the taxes are done (it WAS connected properly.) pc |

You may have lucked out on input devices, but not been so lucky with output devices. PROBLEM TWO The line out level from my hi fi preamp overloads the LINE IN on the sound chip. I've got the Realtek ALC850 record level turned all the way down, and I still get occasional clips. You need some kind of an external attenuator. I know the problem is not with the preamp because I've used this setup with my older systems, and all was just peachy. Try recording from the regular output jacks of your preamp (not the tape out) and just turn the volume down. |
