Default OK, what's the deal with this Tascam DV-RA1000?

I heard about this thing a while back, but ads starting showing up
recently and it made me go hmmmmmm?

I've heard this DSD thing is way cool but I guess I'm wondering once
you get the material mixed to DSD, then what do you do with it?

They talk about being able to transfer it to your DAW, but what
programs read this format?

Do mastering houses accept (and do they like) DSD format?

In a world of MP3 players, it seems like the high res CD formats are
falling on their faces from lack of consumer interest, so I'm wondering
what the advantage of this device, other than being able to store a lot
of regular mixes on a DVD, or being a more expensive hardware CD
recorder are.

Are there any programs and audio interfaces that can do what this thing
does?

I do use my hardware CD recorder a fair amount, but I imagine this
Tascam DV-RA1000 recorder is rather expensive at the moment.

I'm kind of wondering if this thing is headed for the same fate as
their 24 bit DAT recorder.

Thanks,

Analogeezer

You play it in a DSD player, silly!

None. That's not the point. The purpose is to make a home-playable
high resolution copy for a client or for your own enjoyment in your
living room, played on a DVD player. Use the DVD-A format.

Back in "the day," we used to give the client a casette copy as a
reference, first because it was inexpensive, second, because it was
something he could play at home or in the car, and third, because it
sounded bad enough so that he wouldn't release his project from the
cassette recording and not pay his bill for the finished master tape.

I do use my hardware CD recorder a fair amount, but I imagine this

Under $1500, as I recall.

I'm kind of wondering if this thing is headed for the same fate as
their 24 bit DAT recorder.

Probably not. A lot of people were enthusiastic about it at the AES
show where it was introduced, particularly mastering engineers, so
they could deliver high-res reference copies to their clients.

You send it to your DSD-capable mastering studio.

SDIF-3 is the DSD digital connection. Any DSD DAW should accept this format.
(Sony Sonoma, Sadie, Pyramix)

Most do not have DSD capabilities (us included), however this unit may help
open the door to more accessibility. The ones that do would probably love to
get DSD mixes.

The advantage would be that for those projects that will be released in
hi-def (192kHz or DSD) than this device offers a (relatively) cheap means to
that end. It's not going to change the way people listen to music.

Only full-on DSD workstations, as far as I know. Mytek Digital had been
working on a stand-alone DSD recorder a few years ago, but I think they
abandoned it.

You've got to think of it as a competitor to the Alesis MasterLink, not
other CD recorders.

I think with the availability/cost of DVD media and the wide-ranging
capabilities (16/44.1 through DSD) it's got a better chance than the 24-bit
DAT. Only time will tell.

Not quite, Mike. Here's a quote from the Tascam FAQ:

-----
Q: Does the DV-RA1000 record Super Audio CD or DVD-Audio discs?
A: No. It records audio files that are ideal for mastering to DVD-Audio
(DVD-A) or Super Audio CD (SACD). However, discs recorded in the DV-RA1000
cannot be played in a SACD or DVD-A player.

Q: Does it play SACD or DVD-A discs?
A: No, it will play DV-RA1000 discs or CDs.

Q: What can I do with the discs?
A: The discs can be played in any computer with a DVD-ROM drive capable of
playing DVD+RW discs. It creates UDF discs, a standard format read by
virtually all computer platforms, including Mac, Windows and Linux. The
files recorded are Broadcast Wave (.WAV) or DSDIFF (.DFF) files.

Kind of makes it not so attractive after all. Disappointing.
