You can probably pick up a 1980s-vintage AR
turntable for $150-300 on ebay. I did and have never regretted it. (This
isn't the XA/XB, which had stinky tonearms, but the later design with
sloping sides on the platter.)

Got model number(s) for the later editions?

I was going to say ANY Technics in the higher quality models, but dump
the arm and go with an SME or whatever your poison. I'm still using,
as my "spot check" table, an original SL 1200 with an SME 3009 Series
II. Don't try to use a Technics (or any DD table) with a Grado,
however...Grados have lousy shielding and will pick up hum galore. An
SL 110 with an SME Series III and an MicroAcoustics 830csa is about as
good as any phonographic system gets, which is why you can't find them
for sale. An SP 10 Technics is even better, but is unobtainium.
Avoid the early SL 1500s and the junk stereo store models.

All this Rega and other stuff is just audiophool crap, much akin to
Monster Cable. Early ARs were overhyped trash. Getting a GOOD
cartridge that isn't MC is a problem these days, though. Most MCs are
overrated and overly expensive, and like to gobble vinyl at an
alarming clip. I've fooled many a "golden ear" into thinking even my
MicroAcoustics 2002e was a Sumiko Blue something-or-another. The
"new" Shure? Wellll...just more of the same Shure stuff from the
first V15...not that good, not that bad, kinda "predictable." The
switch to a beryllium cantilever helped the "new" Shure a bit in
transient response and tracking, but it still sounds like a Shure.
Rather like an SM-57...not good, but you don't expect too much!

I think mine is the Legend. There's also the EB-101, the ES-1 (which may be
an EB-101 with an Audioquest or Sumiko arm mounted on it), and the ETL-1,
their highest-priced model.

Peace,
Paul

Bob's comments speak for themselves.

My Technics sounds great with the stock arm & a Shure V15 type III
cartridge, although I'm sure a better tone arm would make difference,
I don't know if it would be huge.
