Default About the recording techniques problem I posted...

Well, I got over my snobbery towards excessive usage of gating and
compression and came out with this:

http://tjhertz.collide.org/mixdown2.mp3

Given that I recorded it in my garage with two C1000s, three 57s on snare
and toms, a D6 on kick and a 57 on hats, and mixed it on a 5.1 set of
Cambridge Soundworks computer hifi speakers, I'm pretty happy with the
results. I'm referring mostly to the drum sound. The bass and guitar are
DIed and run through Amplitube (sorry.... lack of amp at my house). I played
all the instruments. Any comments on the mix would be much appreciated.

For the guys in RMMP, it's strictly a rough demo (the first verse and chorus
of a song I've been working on with my band) and the playing's not really
that great. The style is like recent Incubus meets... I dunno, At the
Drive-In or Million Dead?

Comments, thoughts, praise, criticism etc... thanks,

TJ

Wow man! That sounds great! I love your playing also. I don't think you can
get a better sound in a home studio than that.
The more I use it, the more I am amzed with the versatility of the
SM-57......in this case it sounds great on the hats.....
Very nice work!

Thanks. Most of the hat sound is from the overheads, actually, but those are
C1000s - horrible, horrible mics IMHO. There's not much OH in there. The
hats were just loud. :-)

To be honest, there's so much EQ on every channel that I find it hard to
consider what difference a change in mic would make. Lack of experience with
a wide range of mics, I guess.
