Default computer speakers

Hi all, here is an electronics question.. We are building a set of
computer speakers with the feature of a headphone input. We want the
speakers to shut off when the headphone is plugged in (like typical
computer speakers). We are thinking the solution would be a CMOS
transmission gate with the gate connected to a voltage divider, which
goes to ground when the plug is inserted and continutity to ground is
established. But in any case we want to go the low power route. Any
suggestions?

nearly every headphone jack in existence uses a built in mechanical switch
contacts to accomplish this.

examine a typical 70's era hi-fi. often you will find a 1/4" HP jack plus a
speaker on/off switch.
