I fourtunately do not need a new job yet. If I decide to move up that way
the company might be interesting.

Who would one have sleep with and/or kill to get that job,
and, more importantly, in which order?

I wouldn't suggest doing either with John LaGrou, but you could send
him a resume. I'll bet it would be a cool place to work. You'd
certainly have access to some great preamps and a fine listening room. snip

...and no pay. Pay scale up in that very depressed area of California
is almost Southern in nature. Grass Valley (since the demise of Grass
in the "tee bee biz" is similar...minumum wage for tech jobs.

I cannot speak with regard to conditions in Placer county nor to how well
Millenia pays, but where on earth do you get these ideas concerning the
Grass Valley area? While never the greatest compensators (We sometimes
refer to "the pine tree coefficient.") the wetern Nevada county high-tech
employers are currently as competitive as ever. I know literally hundreds
of people who are doing FAR better than minimum wage (without having to
live in San Jose!) and the county unemployment rate is currently about
2/3rds of the state's.

It has been more than 15 years since Grass Valley Group was the only game
in town and you have greatly exaggerated the death of high-tech in Nevada
County!

Right...pay less because you have lots of trees.

Well, having been up there, and knowing people who live there, I have
pretty good sources. $12/hr with crap benefits is NOT a good rate of
pay, BTW.

dB,

For the right person, compensation for the technician position is
highly competitive with Sacramento. Paid health insurance, bi-annual
bonuses, company-funded retirement plan, flexible hours, three weeks
annual paid leave, paid holidays, and a relaxed working environment.
Tahoe / foothill lifestyle is an additional perk.

I e-mailed some specifics, but your address bounced.

Larry is retiring. Forty years experience will be hard to replace.
Great guy who contributed many years here as part of a fantastic
team.

best wishes,
John La Grou,
Millennia Media, Inc.

People make quality of life decisions based on their personal
preferences. I'll take the trees, and you can have the concrete. Enough
skilled people feel the same way that it is true labor goes for less in
the Grass Valley / Nevada City area than it gets in LA. That's because a
bunch of folks left the cities for the hill and mountain country, and
continue to do so.

What is or is not a good rate of pay depends partly on the cost of
living in a particular area and partly upon what one finds important.
The cost of living in some of these upcountry hangs can be a good deal
less than down in the beehive.

Although the real estate costs are still way out of hand in CA, even
in the sticks.

There are other factors and the "pine tree coefficient" is intended only
to indicate that we accept making somewhat less in exchange for living a
life style that we find very enjoyable.

Imagine my surprise that you feel this trumps having lived and worked in
this area for 25 years.

I am genuinely sorry that your friends lack the skills and knowledge to
get better jobs.

Yeah, but I bet by rural Virginia standards, salaries are through the roof
out there.

Pretty expensive if you include the cost of a house someplace else for the
summer.
