Default Auratones - What happened to the company?

Is there any relation to Aurasound? Just curious.

Hey there,

Hot spots are still made. The company is Galaxy audio.
(www.galaxyaudio.com)I didn't spend enough time to track down a current
list price, but if they're going to 350 on Ebay I think that's just a
case of Ebay frenzy and not an indication that the're 700 new or
something. Maybe I'll list mine on Ebay as "vintage". ( I'm SURE the
new ones are CRAP) By the way, what would a CRAP auratone sound like?
Good?

You sure?

I thought I had sufficiently disqualified myself. No, I'm not sure.

If
I was, and the company was dead, I'd have said so. And if I was sure
they were alive, I would have posted their contact information.

A post from a few years ago says they were selling new for
around $100, but now they're going on eBay for $350/pair, which

would
seem to imply that they're no longer available new...

Either that or that they're hard to find, or that they've achieved
"vintage gear" status.

The bottom line is that if you want them you have to first find them,
and second, pay the asking price, new or used.

In a wholesale catalog I have here -

Unpowered galaxy Hotspots are shown @ list $159, w/volume control $169.

Their one-piece PA is $399.95 list; the Galactic Monitor Package w/ 2
Hotspots, 1 core monitor (for apple fans, I guess...), 3 stand adapters,
2 25' speaker cables and a nylon bag is $799.99 list.

Anybody looking to spend $250 or more for a pair of vintage Auratones
should drop me an email.

Maybe I'll list mine on Ebay as "vintage". ( I'm SURE the

Is that a trick question? (I am sometimes a little startled how good
something good-sounding can sound over a pair of Auratones. But that's
the whole point. g)

I had a speaker go out in one of mine last summer and I tracked them
down in Coronado. I don't remember exactly, but it might have even
been in San Diego that I got a number that worked. It went right to a
voice mail and was answered "Auratone...." I must have left 5-6
messages and never got a return call. I'd assume that he's out of
business. It's funny that he sort of slipped away without anyonre
really noticing. I mean, call them what you will, but the Auratones
were, and possibly still are sitting in a lot of our facilities.
I went over to that galaxy audio site and looked at the parts page. I
wonder if those little replacement speakers would work in my now, two
dead Aura cube boxes? It's a lot cheaper than trying to grab a "tired"
pair off of ebay for $300.

Really? ****, I paid, I think, $65 for a new pair in the late '70s. I'll gladly
sell them to the first person who wants to spend $300 on a pair of Auratones.

That's not really a bad idea. The original drivers are nothing
special. I've got a few non-working one's I'd be willing to donate to
CTS to copy if need be. I wonder what sort of upfront money would be
needed for a venture like this?
Now, if they could also produce those woofers for the NS10s for cheap,
I'd bet we could scrape up some venture cap money and really get going
with this idea.

Days earlier I had posted the address for the working website. STILL,
everybody is assuming they are out of business. So, I called the number
on the front page of their site and VOILA! A person! They are in
business, and always have been. The company the makes Auratones is
Galaxy Audio. Here is their info again:

No need to spend $300 on ebay.

If you like working on Auratones, you might also like working on the
8" Quam or Atlas distributed PA speakers. The bottom end corner is
a little bit lower, but not by very much, and they are also handy check
mix speakers if you don't have an ATR-102 handy.

Who made the original drivers? CTS? Shouldn't be that hard to get the OEM to make another run and I'll bet you could move a hundred or two on eBay pretty easily.

There were at least three companies that made original drivers for the
Auratones, and one of the problems is that they sounded different.

Yeah, I've got some with the double magnets glued together. What's
that about?

Reduced magnetic leakage so you can put them near CRTs.

I sort of thought it was something like that. Although I was hoping
for a more Spinal Tap-like answer....like it's twice louder or
something. I was already to glue more magnets to all my drivers....

With two magnets they're twice as fluxy. Or half as fluxy. Or something.
Just don't look at 'em.

My email inquiring about Auratones at Galaxy was answered thusly:

Hi are you still making the Auratone monitor speakers? I see no
mention of
them on your site.

---------------------------------------------------

Hello Al,

You may have us confused with another company. Galaxy Audio has only
manufactured the Hot Spot and Core monitors. Auratone was made by
another company. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

There were a number of different no-name versions of Auratones. We had
a pair (still in use in a family member's stereo) that were knockoffs
but sounded the same. "Auraclones", w/the same drivers, similar box
etc. They were considered a good ref. monitor for radio work, but hat
was in the 1980s.

Well how about the TOA ME-120?

Yeah, it's ported. You could always block the port.
It's one driver!

I like the little Radio Shack optimus speakers for occasional
reference. But I still liked the Auratones better and I wish I hadn't
sold mine.

So make me an offer; pair in good shape, less the foam covers which
disintegrated, and with an empty screw hole in the bottom from having
been brackt mounted in a small production room. I'll even dust them off
before shipping. g

Of course, the ultimate (IMO) such speaker is the Klein & Hummel M50.
But you can have my Auratones for much less than those would cost you.
