I have been producing music for some 20 years now and I cant seem to get a proffesionall sound for sh*t. Here is my problem...
I produce music now totally within my pc, vsti, samples, audio recording, the whole yard, im currently using....Cubase SX for my productions. Ive even used my MPC and Trinity for some songs, however, it is baffling to me that when i play my material against others that there is a difference in quality. I just need the straight facts. Is it the PC,the Software, the soundcard Converters, or am i just plain numb to my own quality. hers my setup.... Pentium 4 2.4ghz processor 1 gig ram System drive 7200rpm 20 gig Audio Drive 7200 rpm 80 gig Audio Library Drive 7200 rpm 80 gig Cubase Sx 2 Hypersonic VSTI, Plugsound Collection, Kontakt Sampler. A host of other VSTIs MPC 2000XL Trinity Rackomount CAD Equitek 300 Mic Behringer Tube Pre Amp Behringer Tube Compressor Usb Midi Box Event 20/20 Monitors and what i suspect to be the problem... A M-Audio Delta 44 24bit/96khz Sound Card Now for 300 bucks Im Sure it dosent have an apogee or protools converter. So can someone put me out of my misery...please...its been 20 years already. Is producing music inside a PC on your own in a room suited to the kind of music you want to make? Pentium 4 2.4ghz processor 1 gig ram System drive 7200rpm 20 gig Audio Drive 7200 rpm 80 gig Audio Library Drive 7200 rpm 80 gig Cubase Sx 2 Hypersonic VSTI, Plugsound Collection, Kontakt Sampler. A M-Audio Delta 44 24bit/96khz Sound Card That's not the problem. Now for 300 bucks Im Sure it dosent have an apogee or protools converter. So can someone put me out of my misery...please...its been 20 years already. Now, I don't mean to be rude, I know nothing about you, and I could well be on totally the wrong track, but... Forget about the gear. Get out there and find real players, people with vibe and aggression and vision, drag them into your studio and work with them, no matter how disruptive it feels. It does not matter what kind of music you are making, you need other people to destroy your habits, challenge your abilities and spill wine on your carpet. I'm saying this because I have fallen into the same trap of thinking it's about the 'sound' and 'production' in the past, them coming across musicians who have made me realise that it's the least important part. I'm not a great producer or engineer by any means, but have managed to scrape through by by working with great players. I've been complimented on drum sounds where I know the recording I've made is terrible, but the feel of the drummer and their instinctive playing the right part has carried it off. I've made the lamest sounding ragga records, which have been saved entirely by the sense of humour and aggression of the toaster. Yes, you probably know all this, but if you have been doing it for twenty years, your production skills are probably great, you just are not getting the vibe you desire.
