Default Looking for metal hardware to build a custom 19" road rack...

I am hiring a local woodworker friend to build me a nice wooden 19"
road case of 22u height.

I want to buy pre-tapped rails for 22u and would like some
recommendations for sources. The rails that I get will affect the
width of the whole thing depending on how they are bent/shaped.
Can anyone point me in a good direction for source? Something nice
quality that wont bend or strip easy. I imagine that 22u causes alot
of stress on the rails when fully loaded because it is so big(tall).

I have seen the nice quality latches and hinges and rubberfeet and
such stuff in some catalog before, I will start digging through my
catalogs now, but I am concerned about these rails and the options
available to me. If you wanna tell me your favourite source for
latches, hinges and such too, then that would be just swell!

any advice appreciated,
thx,
frenchy

I found that middle atlantic sells the RRF21, which is one rack space
smaller than what I was hoping for. The price is $22 each here...
http://www.rpelectronics.com

So that is $44 for a pair. Is this good pricing? They are selling
middle atlantic stuff which is good quality I think.

Also, I forgot to mention that I am interested in mounting some table
top gear in sliding shelves (not drawers, because I dont want a
front). The same company sells a 16" deep middle atlantic one for
$140each!! I wanted about 3 of them, so this will add up fast.!

Is this the only way to go?

I wanted to mount a few tabletop mic pres and a mackie 1202
(horizontally not vertically) and be able to slide them out for
tweaking and then back in. They would always be permanently wired and
ready to go.

thx,
frenchy

Penn Fabrication has just about everything you need.

No. Have your case custom-built by any of several case
manufacturers. Trying to build a road-worthy case such as
you describe is best left to the people who know how.
ATA-rating aside, it's worth it in the long run. There is a
trade-off in the money vs. grief thing.

TCH in Buffalo makes some decent ones that aren't very expensive, which
are tapped. Bud makes some which aren't very expensive, which are not
tapped and require the clips. Vero makes some of both kinds, plus some
that require the square clips, which are phenomenally expensive and very
rugged.

The height isn't as much of a problem as you'd think because the case
is carrying the force as much as the rails, which are supported every
six inches or so.

Probably TCH is the first place to go.

Get a road case maker. They know the ins and outs and a case takes a lot of
abuse. If you must build it yourself, start with the 11 ply Finnish plywood.

snippage here

The height wouldn't be a problem if the rails weren't expected to carry
the weight of the units mounted inside (not to mention the weight of a
particular unit just being carried by the rack mount ears). This really
****es me off the way racks are made, with no support for the units
being mounted inside. Let me explain what I mean.
In the job previous to the one I have now I worked in aerospace,
designing ground stations to control and test satellites (the big
communications birds, weather sats, etc.). The racks we used had a pair
of vertical rails/channels mounted on each side of the rack into which
were inserted threaded pieces that slid up and down inside the channels.
When a piece of equipment was to be mounted, a shelf angle was bolted
(one on each side) to these threaded inserts at the appropriate place so
that the holes in the rack mount ears mated up with the holes in the
front mounting rails. The unit was then bolted through the rack mount
ears to secure it in place. The weight of the piece was NOT supported by
the mounting rails on the front but by the shelf brackets mounted to the
vertical rails on the side of the rack. All the screws on the front did
was to hold the piece in place. I believe we got these racks from HP and
other vendors. None of the racks I see today do this; they expect the
total weight of a preamp, amp, processor, whatever to be held by the
screws and rack mount ears with the rest of the unit flopping about at
the rear (if you have a deep unit). If somebody in the audio market
makes such a rack as I've described, please let me in on who it is.

Should be zillions of places selling the bits, but having done the DIY thing
myself already, I'd say get one built for you by somebody who does it all
the time.

West Penn Fabrication makes all the stuff that you will need.

Their Blue-Tired Casters are excellent and are available in locking and non
locking versions.

The rails are designed to fit in a cabinet that is 19-1/8 inches wide.

The metal is hard enough that bending or stripping is not a problem.

I believe that these are the same as Mid Atlantic sells.
