I agree. I would add that a device such as you describe
would also benefit from having its own electronic memory. An internal memory of a sufficient size could function both as a cache (so as to help reduce the ill effects of read errors (a/k/a 'skipping') and it could support the direct loading of MP3 files from disk (CD or DVD). This would offer a great convenience over than that of having to connect it to another source via a cable. If you would then add a decent FM tuner, basic recording features and the option of using conventional (easily replaceable) batteries (in addition to any internal cells that might be included), I would buy one. Please let me know if if such a device exists!
