It's me again. I thought my problem was solved after the suggestions
I've received following my posting BUT when I e-mailed Core Sound, they,
as well as Oade Brothers, have now said that they cannot supply either a
plug on its own, or a plug with lead.

So, my search for a suitable supplier must now continue. Any further
ideas from anyone?

I've now been told that there is a different but shorter cable for the
SONY SB-M1 that has a 7-pin connector to fit the TCD-D7/8 machines. The
7-pin connector can be opened up (unlike the moulded type) and all 7
pins re-wired as necessary. Can anyone in this NG confirm this?

Yes. The other end goes into the SBM-1 through strain
relief and solders to the board.

If so, it appears that PartSolver in the US has stock of them and that
may be a cost-effective way forward.

I'd appreciate more info about that myself. I only need one
replacement and another for a project.
