Default PC Voice Recording

Hi

I need to do some voice recordings on to PC for a multimedia project I am
going to have to do. I currently have a sennheiser E818 microphone which I
use for other stuff. The cable supplied with it has the standard 3.5mm jack
(like the ones used on computers) but when I use it, doesn't work. Is there
an adaptor.different lead I need for this?
Sorry for my lack knowledge on microphones but normally I plug it in and it
works!

Yes, the E818 is a supercardioid dynamic suitable for computer use.

Standard check list:

1) Is the mic plugged into the mic (not line) input?
2) Is the mic turned on?
3) Is mic input selected in the software (volume control panel)?
4) is the software mic level turned up?

What software are you using to record?

I had the wrong input selected!!!

I am using cool edit 2k to record. now I have got it recording I am finding
I sound very distant and faint all be the levels are up and the boost is
turned on any way round this? I should mention I am using an on-board sound
card. Would I be better with a dedicated sound card or not? I don't want to
spend to much on one as I am only really going to be doing a couple of
projects using it!
