My Spirit Folio SX has unbalanced direct sends. I ordered a 56-pin
EDAC to 16 1/4 inch trs snake. It will arrive this week. I will be
using it to hook up an ADAT. (Insert disparaging comments about ADATs
here)

Will I need to short the ring and sleeve together on the sends in
order to use the Folio's channel direct outputs? I know one way to
find out is try it and see, but I figure a whole bunch of you have
experience with these cables and ADATs.

It might work leaving the low side floating, but electrically it's
correct to connect the low side of the input to the low side of the
signal. Unless your cable has molded plugs, I'd put a jumper between
the ring and sleeve at the plug. It shouldn't take you more than half
an hour once you get in gear.

No need to modify the jacks. The Direct outs are on TRS sockets with the
sleeve & ring shorted.
