While there are no absolutes, I'd think that most people prefer the
sound of a thicker shelled snare, while the thin shells on toms are
preferred.
The thicker shells make the pitch of the drum higher, which is better
for snares, where most people want the loud crack and then to get out
of the way. The thinner shells resonate more, which is great for
toms, where you normally want the shells to resonate and add the
warmth and tone.
This would all fall into line with what you're saying....the thinner
WFL shells sound great on toms, but the Luddy snares are nicer.

**disclaimer** sorry to use words like "preferred", "nicer" or
"better" when describing musical instruments. This is all just my
opinion and not intended to start a long debate.
