Is it difficult to modify an Altec 436a compressor into a 436C with variable
attack/release etc.

It's not hard at all... basically there are a couple resistors and a pot
added into the control path. R9 is a 1M resistor which is replaced with a
1M pot in series with a 270K resistor. This gives you a single "speed"
control to adjust attack and release. Personally I don't think this is
very useful because the knee on these is so soft, but it won't hurt to have.

The 436C also adds a bias balance pot on the cathodes of the rectifier tube,
which is probably a good idea to have there so you don't need perfectly
balanced 6AL5s.

The schematics for both variants should be on the web somewhere.
