Default EQ

Does anyone have any experience with the Langevin solid state pultec EQ?
Thanks in advance

It sounds good. It does some of that bass modulation thing that the Pultec
does, but it doesn't do it the same way the Pultec does. It's a nice sounding
EQ if you're looking for an old-style passive EQ but it's not really an
emulation of the Pultec sound because the inductors are very different in
design.

I was discussing my collection of condensors with David Satz (U-87,

definitely EQ. I'm going to spend upwards of $1000 per channel for
EQ, but I just don't know whether the API 550B is the way to go ($850
more for 2 space rack with PS or $2800)
than the Langevin. Then, David mentioned Speck which is less money.
I mostly record classical and folk/folk rock on analog gear.
Recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

If you haven't messed with the Speck ASC EQ you owe it to yourelf to do
that. Try the one with the transformer output option.

Well, what do you want EQ for?

You need to do lots of tight notch filtering (I do a lot of this for
dealing with PA problems in live recordings, or things like bass guitars
with one note much louder than others)? Or do you mostly need nice gentle
slopes for minor tonal changes? Or do you want a particular effect, like
the bass compression thing that the Pultec gives you?

Do you have any existing EQ? If you have console EQ that is pretty good
to begin with, you can at least rule out what you _don't_ need an outboard
EQ to do.

The Speck is nice, and it is much more versatile than either the Langevin
or the API. It won't do the bass compression thing at all, and it does not
have the pleasant coloration of the API, but I think it would be more useful
because it can be clean and much more subtle when that is what you want, and
it will do a much narrower filter. On the other hand, it doesn't do a narrow
enough filter for many of the things I want... if you want tight you might
look into the Millennia Media, the Prism, or the Great River.

Have you looked at the Great River EQ-2NV? http://greatriverelectronics.com/EQ-2NV.html

Was this you? I'm not completely clear, but for at least the first two of those genres, EQ is not where any of my early money would go...
