Default "rule of thumb" mix position

i seem to remember a rule of thumb that the best listening position in
a room is about 1/3 back from the front wall, in a room with a good
length to it.

is this true in terms of pressure waves and combatting bass-listening
anomolies?

You just can not say it like that, you omit too much information.

No. 5/8's of the room length along the listening axis is less likely to
be on the peak of a room node.

I vaguely recall that some software exists that ought to be able to
predict good listening location(s) in a room.

Kind regards
