Default Anyone interested in having a listen to a track?

If you have a few minutes, I'd be interested in any constructive feedback on
this track.

http://www.philmadsen.co.nz/download/sample_beach.mp3

Since Phil has put it on his site, I see no harm in pointing you folks at it
for any critique you care to offer.

I recorded and mixed it here at my studio, and it was mastered at Studio
301, Sydney.

I feel like the bottom end is still a bit 'big', but since we'll be getting
the whole album mastered as a whole, I'll get that looked at then.

The arrangement etc is a collaboration between Phil and myself, and we are
about to start work on two more tracks.

I played guitar, bass, and keys, Phil did the vocal, and a friend, Evan
Williams played drums.

Phil lives in Auckland, I live in Wellington (about 7 hours drive) so we
collaborate via mp3 ideas, and he flies down for a few days to track vocals
and work on mixes.

Anyway, I'm interested in any comments.

Flame suit on

cheers

Geoff

Are you looking for mix advice or musical advice? I thought the mix sounded
fine, maybe the bass is a little upfront. The backing vocals sounded cool to
me, don't hide them in so much reverb and bring them forward in the mix. I
would like to hear the chorus built up a little more, maybe a clean strat
type guitar spelling out chords or something. Nice work.

Thanks!

Musical and/or mix advice welcome!

Since I will have an opportunity to revisit this before the album comes out,
it is all useful.

It is playing on the Radio around NZ at the moment as is, and sounds
basically fine, but I am looking to improve the mix for the album version.

Thanks for the feedback.

On my setup the bass sounds a little strong.
What bugs me more is it feels too mono. Pan some things harder left and
right.

And good luck getting the 40 & 50 somethings to put down the wine glass and
pick up the record. g

ouch!

Yeah, the bass feels a bit big here too. I havent touched it post-mastering,
so thats for a revisit come album time.

Funny, over here it feels pretty stereo, and when I hit MONO on the console,
it shrinks right in. When I unhit MONO again, it goes 'woosh" and feels
wide.

Oh well, back to the drawing board on that one

Hey thanks for the feedback though!!

Anyone else?

Bass appears detached and lives its own life without being integrated
into the mix. More echo does not provide an illusion of a large room,
more pre-delay of it does, also at a usenet-sized glance echo appears to
be (too)monoic.

Flame suit on

I think you look into getting the bass to appear to be in the same space
as the rest. Something like a 6 dB pr. octave roll-off at 70 Hz may also
suit the overall tone fine and lighten it up. I'd prefer adding a wee
bit, say 4 dB, on say the 5 kHz slider of an assumed octave band
equalizer, so as to address the overall abscense, it sounds too remote
and ought to be more intimate/up front.

Your mileage may vary greatly.

Geoff

Kind regards

I'd echo that. It sounds like the bass has been added on in another
time-and-space, possibly by somebody not involved in the original
perfomances....

The rest seems well integrated and balanced. Except maybe the BVs at the
very end of the sample (last 5 sec) seem a bit 'elsewhere' too.

If I were you I'd find a better room ;-)
