Illy espresso from a real piston
machine on the other hand... 100% Arabica - the only way to go. BRBR

And this is what makes European tours so worthwhile. Have you found a an Illy
source in the US?

Williams Sonoma is carring a small selection in NC.

Actually, my local coffeehouse sells Illy. If you get desperate I can point
you in their direction.

I've ordered from
http://www.lattelove.com, and also purchased it when
I can find it in stores. I've found it at Dean & DeLuca, as well as
other good delis. There's a place near where my brother lives in Falls
Church, VA, some kind of killer Italian deli. I think it's on Lee
Highway, and it's called "The Italian Store". Last time I was in
there, I bought a couple of cans. They have absolutely great
sandwiches, too.

I don't know what it is, but they sure know how to make coffee in
Europe. Germany, Switzerland, Spain, France... never had a bad cup
over there.

There is bad coffee to be sure in Europe, but statistically speaking, your
chances of finding it are slim unless you spend a whole lot of time there.

Sort of finding like good food in London, or has that changed in the
last 20 years?
BRBR

Those days are pretty much over. For one thing there's world class Indian to be
had, as well as a wide variety of other stuff. It's more or less like the rest
of the continent now, lots of options.

Even the pubs usually have something edible on the menu.

Great Lebanese, Chinese, all kinds of stuff. And outrageous Indian as Scott mentioned.

It has, and drastically. Last trip we had some excellent meals in London
(all in "ethnic" restaurants). The immigrants from the former Empire have
been the salvation of British cooking. Hell, the little sandwiches wrapped
in plastic at the railway stations are even good.

And, although the other half of the trip was in Italy, the single best meal
we had on the whole journey was in Brighton. At a Jamaican restaurant, a
hole in the wall on the street leading from the railway station to the pier.
We asked the owner/chef where he got his recipes, and he said, "From my
mother."

Peace,
Paul

Oh, yeah, that's a good place, in Arlington, actually. They used to be
in the 7 Corners shopping center just over the hill from my house.
Whenever I'd need parts from Arlington Electronic Wholesalers which
was just a few blocks away, I'd plan the trip for lunch time and get a
sandwich. AEW moved, and finally went out of business, but The Italian
Store is still there.

Could be because they've always made good coffee over there and
everyone just learned to expect it. Over here, coffee was just a lunch
counter drink until Starbucks caught on, and now that's the
(questionable) benchmark for a "good" cup of coffee. When they first
got started I thought that Starbucks coffee was much more like coffee
than it is now. Must be adjustments for American taste, or maybe
they've found ways to make it cheaper and charge more for it.

I never thought it was that good to begin with, but it's gotten worse; I
think they're leaving it sitting in warehouses for too long, as it always
tastes stale. And the decaf always gives me a headache, which isn't a
reaction I've had to any other decaf. Their hot chocolate can be good,
though, if the right barista is making it.

Peace,
Paul
