Ultimatums work great if you have balls (i.e.; don't care which outcome
happens ) and clout, but one aspect that should be mentioned is that this band didn't need to create a bad rep. They seem to be looking to get more gigs and canceling the gig due to no s-check isn't going to inspire a lot of phone calls. Especially since it's not clear whether the club actually has a setup time and was not inquired about by the band previous to the gig. Joe L |

They had the house music cranked insanely loud with that nasty techno-dance crap and they wouldn't turn it off for us to do a sound-check. Being prevented from doing a soundcheck under those circumstances constitutes failure to provide the necessary facilities to perform your job. You don't even need a tech rider for that to stand up in court. Simply give a manager an invoice for the full agreed rate including your lawyer's contact info, and start loading the gear back into the van. snippage But more importantly, you should know that a proper sound tech / road manager SAVES you money in the long run. That's why they exist. They're not something you can't afford, they're something you can't afford to be without. Have a chat with one sometime about the nightmare gigs like this one you've had in the past, and you'll find they have a solution to every problem you've faced. IN 100% agreement with this poster. I'm working with one client right now that doesn't seem to understand that if the show needs to go on they need to meet the talent's tech rider. OTherwise they might pay their money and get zip. Hmmm amateurs. HIring a pro to do your sound and letting the drummer's girlfriend actually hang out and enjoy the show would be well worth the money for your band. IF she is not pro enough to work under potentially adverse conditions then she's not pro enough to be running your sound if you're truly professionals. IF it happens that she and the drummer own the gear then get her some experience behind the board and pay them so she can learn from them. Richard Webb, Electric SPider Productions, New Orleans, La.
