May not be much less expensive, but I am completely in love with my
u47 fet from 1983. they were $750 used a few years ago. It's a great
investment - it'll never lose value, that's for sure.

I have two U87s and still pick the 47 for most jobs now.

Gorgeous, all of their current mics IMO.

Don't know about the Rode Classic but the NTK I tried was an
unmittigated POS (IMHO) on everything I tried it with through about 5
or 6 different pre-amps.

i wouldn't go so far as to call the NTK a "POS", but i certainly
didn't care for it when i tried it out in sessions over the course of
about a week and a half when it first came out.
