Default Universal Audio 2-610

Anyone using this preamp? Seems like a good unit for the price...Id like to
know about the 'warmth' factor, as I record to digital (sometimes tape)

People who like it say it's "warm". I think it's more mushy than warm. You
should have a listen before you decide.

It's really a nice pre. I'm not sure what you mean by warm, but I think of it
that way. By 'warm' I mean three dimensional and with a silky top end and nice
mid-range. If you mean distorted, you can fool around a little with the
negative feedback on the 2-610. Personally, I prefer it clean. If you think
that this preamp is like heaven and will magically transform everything, you
might be disappointed, particularly if you already own nice preamps. But, as I
first stated: it's a really nice pre.

I have a M610, same as the 2-610 except no EQ and only 1 channel. I like
this pre for some things like U87 vocals or 414TLII vocals. Both are nice
combos. The 610 does warm the sound up, kinda reminds me of what Apogee
does to the sound. I have also used it on bass guitar and gotten some fine
results. You should listen to it you might like it if you already have a
good clean pre and are looking for something different.

I have a 2610 and record digitally, and it's been a great pre...it is pretty
warm, and has a silky quality to it...it has a Hi-Z input on the front, and
I've gotten some really nice bass guitar sounds from it. I'd suggest
hearing it if you can first, to see if it'll work for you.

This preamp has a lot of mixed reviews. Here is some talk:

Whoever said mushy was right.

Don't be misled by the fact that it has tubes. Some of the warmes gear
around is sold state.

I think this is a very limited use preamp. I've only ever been happy
with it on bass and that's only with it as a second DI channel in
place of a bass amp.

I'd go with a GR-MP2NV or a Chandler TG-2 over this. IF you're looking
for a warm front end for digital I'd try a compressor with minimal
compression. A Chandler TG-1 would be my first choice, but a FATSO,
the Pendulum ES-8 and LA-2As all add nice tones.

I'm kind of glad you guys brought this up. I just got a new job and
decided I wanted a really good once in a life time pre and liking the
Beatles and everything 60s figured the UA6176 was for me.

I had it for a week and tried and tried to love it. I don't know I
just didn't. I know it is a great design but it sounded muffled to me
somehow. I also had the overload problem someone mentioned. You get it
to start to sound nice and it starts clipping.

I was embarassed to return it. I ended up with the Trident S20 that I
love and you can adjust the low cut filter. It has the flavor I was
looking for.

I know I am stating the obvious, but everyone has different tastes and
what is good to some is not to others. You really have to bring a
piece of gear home and record in your room with all your gear and
guitars and find out if it is right for you.

I keep trying it on different sessions but have yet to find something
I prefer it on.
On piano it doesn't seem to have enough definition and on drum cymbals
it just seems
muddy with Km84's, Blue Dragonflies, or TLM170's.

To me the 2-610- is jsut mushy and cloudy. I much prefer more warmth
from other sources
some of which are even solid state! (good heavens).

Best regards and
happy listening-
Chris

Wait, you think you've made a "once in a life time" purchase?
Ahahahahahahahahahahhahahahaa! Dave, you might as well be a junky
claiming you're just going to get high one last time. Come back after
a few years (and many thousands of dollars later) and tell us all
about your latest "once in a life time" gear purchase. No way. You're
now hooked just like the rest of us.
LOL! ;-)
-Paul

Yeah I might be. I have a MP20, A Bellari and a GRME1NV, I wanted to
love the UA6176, I don't know I just didn't. I love all my preamps on
some level. I love my new Trident too. For now I am done with gear. I
am just waiting for my new opamp chips to show up for the Bellari.

So you could be right but I hope not. That will leave me no money for
guitars!!
