I have a small Yamaha system, MCR E500, that I am happy with.
You also might want to check out Onkyo, Nakamichi, or Denon.
All of these companies produce small systems that don't suck.

I have a TEAC that's okay.

I strongly recommend systems with two-way speakers. The sound is noticeably
better than systems with a single driver.

You didn't say how small so, there is this neat little MP# player that I got
for my youngster. It's the size of a USB memory disk and has good sound.

I don't let them put anything on it but what they actually own in terms of
content. We have never had one of those P2P programs, as a strict System
Administrator, I am completely against any desktop PC being a server and
having a back door to the world of danger.

Yes, everything I've looked at has been two way. One was even three
way in fact.

Cambridge SoundWorks SoundWorks 740 Radio CD

Not recommended. You want a system with separate speakers.

By the way, I noticed that J&R has an Onkyo mini system for $180. Onkyo makes
fairly good stuff.

I was actually very close to buying this last week. I read the reviews
and they were very good except everyone seemed to think that it was
overpriced. I decided to check out a few others but have not
completely decided against it yet. Thanks.

As an addition...I heard that the built in powered subwoofer really
makes the bass sound pretty good for a small package. I believe they
have a 30 or 45 day return policy too which can't hurt.

This is a very euphonic sounding system and looks like a million bucks
(in my opinion). There is a "sub woofer" that actually does produce
some bass content, with a CD player, radio, and aux inputs. Did I
mention how cool it looks? Very listenable.
