Default Studer A-80 not used, on or off?

We have a STUDER A80 Mark II 24 Track Tape Recorder that is in good
shape but has not been used for a session since September of last year.
A couple of months ago after a black out, I turned it off, and I have
yet to turn it back on. This makes the CR that much quieter. I have no
idea when the deck will be used again, but I'm sure it will.

So, leave it on or leave it off?

Power up and run tape every once and a while?

Any other thoughts?

BTW, The deck in not for sale.

Thanks a bunch, -Mick

It doesn't need to run all the time.

--Yes, definitely. FF and rewind a tape once a while and play back a
little. Tape machines love this.

I had a bit of luck when I first switched on a Revox B77 which has
been off for decades. The first fractions of a second the transformer
has been put under extreme strain, almost short-circuited, as the
power capacitors have had to form theirselves again. The machine
developed a dangerous smell.
To do it right, I should have used a variac transformer for the first
time. Now the machine is OK but as I said, I have been lucky.

I'd definitely power it up from time to time and run some tape if you're not
doing so as a matter of course in sessions. I've wondered about the same thing
with my MX80, but fortunately have had occasion to use it often enough for it
not to be too much of an issue.

I think it's sort of like putting a car in storage - it's a complex machine
whose moving parts need a little exercise from time to time so they don't seize
up.

Which reminds me...I should get more exercise myself... : )

Ted,
Just take your MX80 out for a walk once in a while.
