what is "top-posting"?

And in case you don't understand, this is not. "Top posting" is the
practice of putting a reply above the original message. So you see the
reply before you know what the post is about is.

This is usually called "in-line posting" where the reply is
interspersed with relevant portions of the original message.

There's another style that's as annoying to read as top-posting, and
that's where the responder quotes the entire original message in one
lump and then proceeds to write a reply in one lump. It's like you're
reading a (usually not very well written) paper from someone who isn't
quite an authority.

the 4 aes or spdif pairs would all be coming from one unit, the lavry
blue loaded w/ 4 MAD modules. this thing shares clock amongst all its
modules, so they are all in sync

You'd still need to synchronize the A/D converter with the computer
interface. I suspect that RME, being pretty advanced in their
implementations, might have a mode where all of the inputs are
synchronized to the same clock source, either an external word clock
input (from the converter) or from your choice of one of the AES/EBU
inputs. But I don't really know.

The Lynx 16-channel AES/EBU interface has a mode where all of the
inputs are re-clocked to whatever you're using as a word clock
reference, which guarantees synchronization between all outputs and
all inputs.
