Default ProTools on a G4 Laptop (400). Your experience?

ARRRRRGH!

I'm using the latest everything, but this configuration is BARELY
USEABLE!
Latest ProTools for OS10.3 MBox

Can barely do a few tracks with NO plug-ins. Usually "usb audio
Hardware" and DAE 9016 (or something like that) errors. And bouncing-
forget it!

All I really need to do is put in stereo files from a cd and play
along, recording my track, and delivering the file back to the client.

Highly considering going back to (gasp) OS9 for real work. Is there
any other way besides dropping the money for new hardware???

I would love to hear about anyone elses experience using an MBox on a
G4 laptop. Mine sucks.

What's so wrong with rebooting back into OS 9 for your audio work?

I've got a G4/400 tower, and I wouldn't think of running ProTools on OS
10.3 with it... the tower has enough problems running shareware
two-track audio editors in OS 10.2, let alone the rig you're trying to
run.

I've also not had good luck running USB audio equipment with any version
of OS X. I'm inclined to believe that the FireWire interface has much
better speed and bandwidth than the USB port found on a G4/400, be it
tower or laptop.

Until you can drop the money for more capable hardware, stay with OS 9.
At least you can set up the Extension Manager (or Conflict Catcher) to
load only those extensions necessary to support your audio work. Using
effective extension and memory management, there's no reason why your OS
9 machine has to crash.

I've been using a g4 667 powerbook with an Mbox for more than a year and it
works great. I can run plenty of RTAS plugs and with an external firewire
drive I get full track count without hiccups.

What version of PTLE are you running? According to posters on the DUC,
PTLE6.4 runs a bunch better with OSX10.3.4.
I just picked up a G3 500mhz iBook, updated to 10.3.4, and PTLE 6.4 and
so far no problems. It is a little slow, but what do you expect from a
500mhz machine? I have had no problems doing a couple of tracks so far.

How much RAM do you have? If you have only 256MB or so, I'd imagine the
machine would be pretty much unusable due to constant swapping. While
your machine is not recommended, they suggest 384MB and ideally 512MB or
more of RAM for best performance for those machines that are recommended.

I don't run PT on my iBook yet, but I find that 256MB doesn't go very
far in OSX, and when you're deep into swap, the machine gets glacially
slow. I'm now debating whether to add 512MB or 1GB; unfortunately, the
1GB DIMM costs many times what the 512MB DIMM costs, but if adding the
512 is not enough, then I have to throw it out and buy a 1GB anyway.
Annoying...

Best of luck,

Monte McGuire

I have an 800MHz G4 with 1GB RAM for a digi 002, running OSX 10.3.2.
I haven't really done much more than 2 track work with it yet, but, so far,
even with the single hard drive, everything moves along really well.

Hello, I'm running PT 6.4 on a 500 tibook and I do stereo 24 bit recording
to the internal 20 which is partitioned into 5gig for OS9, 5gig for OSX, and
10 gig for storing files and recording to. When I have a heavier track count
I use an external 7200 rpm firewire drive. I easily do 12 to 16 tracks
without plugins. It depends which plugins you use, if I use 2 1176's it
brings my system to a crawl. I have 512 meg of ram.

With Digital Performer I have mixed a 20 track song with waves plug-ins and
a reverb.

Good Luck, Pete

I don't know how relevant this is to the original post, but I am also running
02 on a 800 Mhz G4 (tower, not laptop). I've had 16 tracks at 24/92 going,
with a dozen or more plugins at the same time... I did get teh message, at that
point, that I was getting near my CPU limit, but I increased the allowable
usage to 85% at that point and added more plugins, trying to see if I could hit
the limit again, and never did until I got bored (The whole thing was an
exercise to try to find "the end")...

Something I have found in OS9 is that if my ethernet cable is not plugged in
(even though I only network the computer, no internet) to both the router and
the compueter, it will not play back worth a damn even 2 tracks.

If the computer is not going to be networked, make sure anything relating to
networking, ethernet etc, is disabled.
