Default Best stage monitor for the buck

I play in a rock/blues band with a med-high stage volume. My crappy
Crate monitors are about to fall apart. So, I'm looking for a good
sounding, rugged monitor. Carvin has a 15" monitor for about $250
delivered, but I have no experience with them. You can probably tell,
my pockets aren't very deep. But, I will pay for a quality value.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated

Do you care more about sound quality or about ruggedness? Do you mostly
run vocals through the monitors, or do you often have other stuff in the
monitors as well?

The Carvin monitors are very light... not much driver in them, and very
light grade plywood. This is a good thing if the things are getting
dropped a lot, but a bad thing if most of the failures are from the corners
loosening up. If you don't care about low end extension (and most folks
want the low end _out_ of the monitors), you might do better with a
higher grade 12" than a cheaper 15" wedge.

The cheap Fender wedges have molded plastic cases that hold up very well.
The piezo tweeter in the things sound just awful, but they really get
a vocal to penetrate through the noise on stage, which is often more
important than sounding good.

Might also check out the soon-to-be-available (really) Mackie SRM-350.

You might want to look at the Yamaha S115-IV. They are pressed baskets
so they don't have a lot of vibration and they sound great for the bucks
(something around $250 I think) I don't think you will find the clarity
in anything less then twice what they cost.

Make the subject: " Best stage monitor for the buck - ERRATA" next
time you need to correct yourself. Interesting thread btw.

Kind regards
