Default OK, Why were they called "Prime Times" (Lexicon Delays)

I remember way back when and the coolest thing to have was a Lexi
Prime Time.

They were way out of my league back then (I was using an MXR Analog
Delay back then) and I didn't know much about them.

Some studio guy told me back then that "Prime number delays sound
better because they are not divisible by other delay times", but
looking back on this I think he was BS'ing me.

SO....what is the legend behind the name....has to be one of the
coolest product names ever I will say.

Yeah. "Prime Time II" didn't have quite the flair. Better bandwidth, though.

More like Lexicon was BS'ing all of us!

The better bandwidth was why it didn't have the sound!

True. The return shouldn't sound like the original.

(Well, not all the time, anyway.)

Probably because by the time it came out, delays were finally ready
for "prime time." Since it's a time-based effect, the name makes a
certain degree of sense.

I was in the delay manufacturing business at the same time with a
company called Audio Digital (it was us, Lex, and DeltaLab for delay at
that point in time) and that's the story I heard. Doesn't necessarily
make it true, but it's plausible.

Didn't this have something to do with 'prime' numbers ?

Did you guys make the two channel unit with the toggle switches and
LED's in increments?

That was cool!

Yes. There was an explanation about it in the "Prime Time 93" manual
but I haven't seen it in a few years and I don't remember what the
story was. I do remember that there was an indicator light on the 93
that would indicate when a prime number was selected by the
millisecond delay setting.

That's as I recall it (albeit hazily), as well. It IS a catchy name for a
product (as the o.p. alluded to), however. A couple other product names
from a bygone era that I've always thought were pretty slick a

1.) Ursa Major Space Station
2.) Publison Infernal Machine

I want to know why the new BLUE preamp is called "Robbie." I haven't
seen it on the hoof yet, but from the pictures I don't think it looks
at all like a robot.

Maybe it was intended to be mounted on top of an EMT 251.

I think they called it that for marketing, and not tech BS marketing,
reasons; "ready for primetime" is implied, and they did work well and
flexibly for the technology of the day, and reliably by any standard.

They are not limited to prime numbers for delay choices, but do indicate
with a little red dot in the display when a prime number is selected.

Yep, that was us...I've still got the demo model we took to NAMM that
was completely hand soldered by yours truly! Of course, the first demo
model we took didn't have anything working but flashing lights...

Actually, that was the company we had before Audio Digital...Advanced
Audio Designs. We made gtr. and bass preamps to financce the delay
design. So long ago that I had to really dig through the brains cells
to remember!

I worked at a studio where we had your product. We often used it for
pre-delay before the plate in the days when seperate boxes did all that.

Cool stuff!

The first time I saw the RADAR at the Anatek (?) booth, they said,
"Come back at 3:00. It'll work then."

I know a guy that works on a lot of vintage gear and owns a Publison
(not the Infernal Machine though), based on what he says about working
on them I think "Infernal Machine" was an apt title!
