That would certainly explain it.

I've learned
the hard way that you MUST walk the venue. Listening only from the mix
position means you're only going to be mixing FOR the mix position.
Every area in a given venue is going to sound different, and if you
don't mix in it every day, you better walk it! Even during the gig if
the set permits...

I find it hard to believe that an engineer responsible for such a gig
WOULDN'T have walked the room, but the only other excuse would be that he
wasn't up to the job. Maybe he was very cheap?
