On the 'mic' setting, the pre-amp is so noisy that its analogue noise
predominates, but on 'line' the noise is mainly digital and about 30dB
noisier than that D/A chip should be if it were in a well-designed
circuit.

The real question is, at the line-level setting is it better or worse
than using the analog line-in on a PowerBook?

I think it would be very helpful to either bypass the mic preamp in
the iMic completely, or knock its gain down a whole lot.

I hard-wired it to 'line' level and did all the amplification in the
outboard pre-amp. My design wasn't by any means the best that could
have been achieved, but it was adequate for the job in hand and a lot
better than what was there previously.

I would like to see the results of an Audio Rightmark test on the modified
iMic operating via its line input.

Is there anything special that needs to be done?

Thanks, SR1

Yeah, ask a more specific question.

Depends. Are the tapes clean and in good shape? Do they have tones on them?
Lining the machine up with the tones for each tape is half the battle.
