Default question about submixers and "groups"

hello everyone,

let's say you had an 8x2 analog mixer. you take the stereo outputs of
it, and run them into 2 available channels on a 16 channel mixer.

from a gain-staging/signal-flow standpoint, is this the equivalent as
a "group" on something like an SSL? meaning, if you setup 8 channels
of drums on an SSL to all go to a "group" and then eventually find
their way to the master 2-mix, is it kind of the same as cascading a
smaller mixer into a larger mixer (in terms of voltages, op-amps,
gain, summing, etc)?

i'm not very good at explaining myself electronically, so hopefully i
described it o.k.

Sort of. Once you get out of the mic preamp, everything is pretty
close to unity gain give or take a few dB one way or the other that it
takes to fit something into the mix.

You still have to watch levels at each stage to be sure that your
submix doesn't overload the input to the main mix console, but that's
essentially how subgroups work, whether they're built into the console
or are external as you're describing.

People who use a console in conjunction with a DAW often work in a
similar mode. They'll mix, say, all the drums to two channels coming
out of the computer interface, then connect those channels to two
inputs on a console. Now they can use the computer to tweak each snare
drum beat so that they're at equal level and the tom hits are just
right and everything on the snare track is muted (cut or dropped to
zero level) between hits) and have a nice clean, properly mixed drum
part appearing on two console faders.
