By me renting a high dollar A/D unit as needed, is there a difference
sonically
between doing this & using a PTHD 192 rig. I'm not talking about the actual
software or anything...just strictly getting into the thing with 2 channels

is it negligible.

Talking only about the A/D side, it's completely fine to use a 001 rig
to print tracks. There should be no difference between using this sort
of system and a PTHD 192 system. I routinely use an old d24 TDM rig to
print tracks and it's just fine for this use.

Actually, I think you're a little more secure using a 001 than a 192 on
HD, since a 192 has the possibility of hardware sample rate conversion
applied to the digital inputs, and this could trip up a bonehead and
cause possibly degraded data to be tracked. Yeah, you have to be
clueless about your session's sample rate and the sample rate of the
outboard converter and also have to turn on hardware SRC, but it could
happen. It's not possible on a 001 - you get big, regular clicks and
pops in that scenario instead of subtly altered data.

Practically though, you haven't addressed the issue of monitoring. If
you're monitoring through the box (i.e. using PT to generate a cue or
monitor mix), then you have two very different situations in terms of
how the mix is calculated, what converters are being used, etc. etc.

This could affect how you make decisions.

But, to directly answer your question, a 01 system can competently print
tracks just as well as a PTHD/192 rig.
