Default noise cancelling headphones: are they any good?

does anyone have experience with noise cancelling headphones?
How good are they (in cancellation and overall sound quality).

The Bose are supposed to be good, does anyone have them?

They are good on repetitive low-frequency noise. Piston engine aircraft
noise almost disappears. On higher frequency jet noise they are not as
effective. Overall sound quality is certainly good enough for voice
applications.

Bose makes several different lines, from pilot models that are pretty
effective, down to some cheapies that are pretty much worthless. Likewise
Sennheiser makes a couple good ones and a couple lousy ones too.

Absolute necessity if you're working out of an open helicopter.

Those are the mid-grade ones, and I have to admit that I have not tried them
yet. I've tried the Tripath cheapies, which are not very useful, and I have
tried the Aviation Headset X, which actually works pretty well.

None of these are really useful for critical listening of music, but they
might be okay for AM-radio type stuff. They aren't really intended for
fidelity as much as intelligibility and they all have some weird presence
peak stuff going on to get better intelligibility. This is a very good thing
in high-noise environments.

Not exactly active noise cancelling models but:

I got to listen to some of the Bose active cancelling headphones this
past weekend. Sounded okay as headphones with a comfortable open air
feel. Didn't do an A/B but felt ear buds did just as good of job
cancelling engine rumble.

Best,
Andy
