Default Dan Armstrong - RIP

If you don't know who he was, he's the guy that designed the
"plexiglass" guitars and basses sold through Ampeg and also made some
pretty cool effects in the 70's.

There's a bunch of other stuff he did to I can't recall at the moment.

He was 69 years old:

He also designed a couple of really nice fretless basses which were sold by
Hohner. Semihollow body, dual pickups (the second edition had humbuckers);
in one set of settings you could make it sound like a Fender, in another it
sounded like a standup. Very nice instruments, wonderful feel on the neck. I
had flatwound nylon tape strings on mine, and loved it right up until the
day somebody stole it. I saw two others in stores before my was stolen (one
in St. Louis, one in England) and haven't seen one since.

Peace,
Paul

I had one of those basses! Semi-hollow fretless, natural finish. It
was great. Unfortunately, mine was stolen as well. It had the same
type of strings you are describing - I think. The outer coating is
like a smooth, glossy plastic. It sure would be nice to find a set of
those. I love em.
RIP Mr Armstrong. He definitely made some cool, funky instruments.

I had one of those basses in my music store fretless and in really poor
condition. qll broken up but the neck was solid.

I ended up rebuilding, refinishing it and selling it for about $400.

I didn't know that Dan Armstrong had a hand in building it.

I really thought that some of his stuff was cool such as the Lucite guitar with
replaceable pickups. Though the bridges were total garbage.

Did he have anything to do with Danelectro?

I thought he was connected with Ampeg.

He was a good player, too...

I saw him a few years ago after hours at one of the Anaheim NAMM
hotels, sitting in with a B3 trio...
Nice tone and technique...

Yes, I had a set like those -- flatwound with nylon -- but mine came from
Rotosound. When I first bought the instrument, though, it had a set of
completely smooth nylon-coated strings which I'm told came from Fender. Got
a set of those right now on my pawnshop special bass. Still like them. Liked
the Rotosounds even more but couldn't find another set. Maybe I'll dig up a
set of these Fenders.

Peace,
Paul

I loved Dan Armstrong's Orange Squeezer, that little compressor plug in
guitar box. Now where would Steely Dan and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter have been
without that thing?

I played bass in a progressive rock band for about a year back in the early
80's, and during that time I used a Rick 4001 through an Ampeg Jupiter Head
& dual 15 Fender cab with an Orange Squeezer in between (reversed the leads
inside so that you'd plug it into the head rather than the output jack on
the instrument); and man, it was tough to beat that combination for that
powerful, crashing, slightly-driven Rick sound!

Woohoo! I've got a set on the way, along with "Big Buildings".
Many thanks.
