Can someone clarify for me what a voice coil is in a tweeter. I had sent in
my crossover together with a horn tweeter for repair thinking it was the crossover that was faulty but after a few hours of testing the serviceman said that the crossover was ok but that the tweeters voice coil was bad. So waht is this voice coil and can my tweter be repaired? Is the voice coil same as the 'diaphram'? Pls, any help will be appreciated. Thank you Winston P/S The items in question are Klipsch Tangent 100 tweeter and it's crossover. |

So waht is this voice coil and can my tweter be repaired? Is the voice coil same as the 'diaphram'? The diaphragm is the piece that is big and flat(-ish), since that is good for pushing and pulling air. The voice coil is the electromagnet (which is made of a coil of fine wire) whose changing magnetism (in the presence of a permanent magnet) causes the motion. The voice coil is attached to the back of the diaphragm, because its job is to push on and move the diaphragm. Probably what happened is the tech measured the resistance of the voice coil and found that it was too low; this means the wire has short-circuited somewhere and the current is never getting to (most of) the important part. Or, maybe the resistance is very high, indicating that the wire has actually been broken. Either way, it's not easy to fix. In most cases, I think it's easier just to buy another tweeter. You could contact Klipsch, and they may be able to sell you one for something like $20 to $100 (if I had to guess randomly). Their web site indicates they have a parts department. - Logan |

It's a coil of wire that is cemented to the diaphragm. Usually you replace the whole diaphram assembly as a single unit. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |
