Default Is this something I can purchase or have made (brass pegs for gamelan instrument)???

If you happen to know how I can replace some of these brass pegs
(which are holding up the rope, which in turn, holds the brass keys
up!) for this Javanese gamelan instrument (gender), please contact me
and let me know. I am in the Los Angeles area.

Is it something that I can have made for me at a machine shop? If so,
where?

Is there something else that looks somewhat like it that I can
purchase somewhere?

I probably need about ten of these.

This is a link to a picture of the instrument:

Thanks!

See if you can find Montino Bourbon in Montecito (Santa Barbara.) He has a gamelan and knows quite a bit about them.

Ken, haven't heard from you for a while.

Now you just need the rest of the Orchestra. We have one at the University of
Montana

This is something that any machine shop could build easily.

You could probably find some hobbyist with a metal lathe to do it for less
money, but cutting brass is no big deal.

You could do it yourself with a hand drill and a file if you have a fair amount
of time on your hands.

It would probably take me about an hour to make one using that method.

Raw material is available from McMaster-Carr.www.mcmaster.com

Brass or bronze available find the smallest dimension hex rod that will work
and go from there.

Good luck.

You didn't mention whether you want something functional,
or something that looks "authentic" (like the current ones).

Functional you could assemble out of parts from any good
hardware store.

Authentic will require finding a machine shop that can turn
brass (on their lathe), machine the notch (with a milling machine,
etc.). You didn't mention how these things attach to the (wood?)
frame. I would make the new ones with a threaded hole in the
foot and fasten them with a screw from the underside of the wood.

Most machine shops in medium to larger communities should
be able to make these. There are scores (or even hundreds)
of such potential vendors in LA. Most likely some of them
specialize in brass turnings, reproduction hardware, or even
musical instrument hardware. Are you intending to restore
this instrument yourself? If not, an instrument restoration
specialist would likely already have sources of reproduction
hardware.

Since you are in the L.A. area, here is a kind of left field idea
8-).

California Institute of the Arts in Valencia has, among other things,
an extensive world music program including Balinese and Javanese
gamelans.
Since thy have run these programs for many years, I wouldn't be at all
surprised to find that they had found some crative ways to maintain
their instruments. Perhaps they could help, or at least provide some
information.

Try www.calarts.edu for information and contact data.

Those are a bunch of great ideas. I will try Cal Arts, and if that
doesn't work, try to look for something functional to tie me over
until I can get brass and get to a machine shop. Thanks again!
