hi
i have read some psots about this on your group and have a question i bought this pre amp yesterday and it's very very noisy - mainly a constant hiss i have tried swopping out cables, mics, having monitoring off, everything i can think of still it sounds like someone left the gas on and mic'd up the output of the oven! i have a powerbook and simply want to record guitar/vocals into garageband i though USB would be a better interface because of the digital nature i do have 1/8th line in, would that be less hissy? i thought not, as it must be a cheap line in... is there a sub200 quid ($400) for recording my little tunes? thanks in advance damian |

In article writes: setting the gain on the preamp using the gain control on the front. it mkaes no odds to the hiss whatever i set the gain to. the tascam us122 looks like a suitable alternative as this is going back to the shop i think... I had a US-122 in for a review here. It wasn't the quietest preamp I've ever used, but it was adequate. I found that I had to sing pretty loud with a low output mic like a Beyer M260 a foot away before I could hit the clipping point, even when set near full gain. What does your record level look like? Are your peaks anywhere neare full scale, or are you running with peaks below -20 and just turning up the noise on playback? Gain set to about 3 and if i sing loudly i can hit clipping Tried turning monitoring off, and have playback volume set to about a quarter and still the hiss is there (thx for your help with this btw) damian |

It is what it is, I'm afraid. I have one too, and it has pretty low
headroom, plus hiss. However... if you find the sweet spot, it sounds serviceable. I thought the Tascam would probably be better, but a friend who has one says it's similar. Personally, I would doubt it's as bad. Exchange it for the Tascam. -- ------------------------------------------------------------- Now available: new Particle Salad CD "The Track Inside." Try the m-audio Delta 410 (Firewire). Works great for me.
