Subject: newbie digital mastering questions [...] Digital summation seems to cause some problems. What problems might those be? I'm using cool edit pro 2.1. [...] Is the problem with modern tools that tend to be inherently clean, or is the problem related to custom, habit, familiarity, training and experience with unfamiliar tools? Well, that was sort of the direction of my inquiry-- to differentiate a few things before I just started buying this or that. Whether I needed a few texts, or some hardware, or more experience, or all of the above. But thank you for your useful information and classic subtle condescending usenet persona ![]() [...] Exactly what automatic pan messages are you speaking of, if you are using Audition/CEP? If you are doing multitrack mixing with Audition/CEP, the technical equivalent of pan messages reside in the .ses file associated with this particular session. They don't go anywhere near your audio interface, and are always kept separate from the audio files for each track and the mixdown. If you have several tracks that need pan adjustments on them, and you do not have a mixing board with memory, then to physically turn the pan/fx knobs that quickly as the tracks progress could be very difficult. Of course this depends on what is needed for each piece. Pan messages are heard out a stereo pair. If you used an audiocard with 8 independant outs, then you have 8 outs, and no pan messages would apply. You would wind up going thru a physical board to get down to a stereo pair. Even if you went back into your card, you would have to blend them somehow, before going into the stereo in. Mark |
