The term "ripping" in my understanding relates to the crass, fast, and undignified rapid bulk extraction of music from a CD that involved little skill on the part of the doer. Whereas I've seen it applied to everything from quick-n-dirty extraction directly to 128 kbps mp3, to the fussiest testing/error-correcting Exact Audio Copy setup.
