Default Is it a deal?

Just surfed www.overstock.com and found the following:

Crown CE4000 power amp $1013.00
Crown CE1000A3 power amp $417.00
Alesis RA 500 power amp $298.00
Alesis RA300 $224.00

Is anyone familiar with these amps?

I know Crown used to be highly regarded, are they still well thought of?
Alesis is a company I know I've heard of and thought they went out of
business, can't remember much about what sort of quality.

Crown always had terrific specs.
Audiophiles always had nagging feelings about the sound quality.
The DC300A was the perfect amplifier of it's day, yet some people felt it
sounded less than perfect.
In significant part, it was responsible for igniting the specs-vs-sound
debate.

I feel comfortable in saying they have to at least be very good.

I've used Alesis pro amps in my keyboard monitor systems for years,
never had any problems. Their build quality was adequate enough to
survive a live environment (G-forces, beer, shorted speaker leads
etc.).
I'm not familiar with the Crown models you mention, the only one I
know very well is the DC300 (boatanchors, anyone?)
Indestructable sturdy and simple amp. Sounded like nothing, but good
for PA work.

The prices on the Alesis types sure look nice enough.

Crown CE4000 power amp $1013.00

http://www.hookedontronics.com/show_...b=Crown_CE4000

$65 more

I'll bet money it has a fan.

Crown CE1000A3 power amp $417.00

http://www.jacksmusicstore.com/home?...tegory=manu f

Just $5 more.

I'll bet money it has a fan.

Alesis RA 500 power amp $298.00

http://www.allprosound.com/catalog/p...asp?fprodid=45

just $19 more

Convection cooled.

They brag up its RA100 heritage. I have a few RA100s in service, and while
they sound fine, they had some funny situations with connectors. The input
and output connectors were both phone jacks, and could be fairly easily
confused.

Alesis RA300 $224.00

http://www.northernsound.net/Sales/P...lesisamps.html

is $55 more, so this is the best deal of the bunch in terms of percent
discount.

Convection cooled.

Is anyone familiar with these amps?

Yes. They sort of smudged up their reputation with the DC300, but that was
many decades ago.

Alesis is a company I know I've heard of and thought they went
out of business, can't remember much about what sort of quality.

They are back in business as a subsidiary of Numark, the cheapo-cheapo DJ
equipment company. Alesis has a long reputation as a source for
bottom-feeders, Probably the best product they ever had was the ADAT, and it
was the replacement of the ADAT with the DAW that put them on the skids a
few years ago.

Unfortunately for where you live, shipping cost is ridiculous.

Shortly after the first of the year I will be looking for some new
amplification, so one or more of these amps may have a place in my system.

Alesis is available overhere, Crown may be a problem.
I don't need a new pro amp though, there's a DIY monster in there now.

I've never used the Alesis amps in a home system, but why shoudln't
they be used there? That is if you need 300 watts/ch .
Are your speakers that inefficient, Mike? :-)

It's not the wattage, it's the noise. Krooger uses the same excuse for
having noisy commercial amps -- all that noise from the fans makes it
impossible to detect small improvements in the system.

No, but I like headroom , plus I may want to add a second subwoofer at some
point and I'd like it to not be highpassed. The Hypex plate amp model HS200
is $349.00 for 125watts at 8 ohms. I could bridge one of the Alesis amps
get more power and save money.

Overstock also has at least one model QSC amp that can be bridged to mono
and put out 1500 watts and it's still less than the 900 watt Hypex.

Extraordinary in what way? I have an old Accoustat 120 + 120 amp and the
only thing extraordinary about it is that the filter caps started going bad
and I've retired it.

Ever hear of eBay?

Looks like Acoustat audio gear, while offered and sold only in small
volumes, goes cheap.

Recent closed auctions shows a preamp and speaker sold for about $125 each.

Because I've had to replace one already and it solved the problem for a

Of course I don't want to sell it cheap, I want to sell it for as much as I

The clean power + quality bet for right now is the Behringer EP2500.

http://www.behringer.com/EP2500/index.cfm?lang=ENG

1200 wpc 2 ohms, $379

500 wpc 8 ohms

You have to have 600 wpc? For what? Do you have unstable loads to
drive? Or are you looking to put 1200 watts into a subwoofer?

BTW, are you sure that Arnold would approve? It's only 34 lbs after
all. Must be a lot of "air" in that chassis.

To avoid even the remote chance of clipping.

No.

Or are you looking to put 1200 watts into a subwoofer?

Not the current one but maybe the next one built around an Adire Tumult or 2
but that may change. www.adireaudio.com has the details on the drivers.

The Tumult is rated for 1600 watts.

You know of course that way before the output stage could reach
clipping, the input stages may lock themselves up to one of the supply
voltages, don't you?
I've seen some pro amps having trouble with this , especially when
strong RF interference was present.

Nothing that a good design, some EMC measures and shielded cables
can't solve, but then again: some designs are just too cheaply built
as to have decent PSRR, CMRR and HFR. This is a bigger issue in the
big city as it is out on the countryside, though. Where I live I've
got hardly any RF interference.
This is a minor issue with tube amps, as well.

I'm not familiar with that particular model.
Though Behringer in general is nice stuff, it's also built cheap.
The possible advantage is that the design is good while the
manufacturing takes place in the Far East.

The Behringer products I've used (EQ, compressors, headphone amps,
Eurodesk mixer) worked fine, be it with wobbly knobs and torqueing
chassis'.
Might not be a problem with amplifiers in a domestic environment.

You sound like a girly-boy.

You sound like a vexed, tired oldster, a pathetic repressed pederast.

:-(

You have 20 more guesses left.

I am not guessing, you use to exhibit yourself daily on RAO...
Why do you think that your pitiable "friendship" has been rejected so
many time on RAO ? ;-)

hah! Talk about friendship! The French know nothing about
friendship. They are only interested in using others for furtherance
of their immediate short term gains. When their 'friends' are no longer
of any utility, the French will stab them in the back and dump them.
