Isn't that kinda the idea of SACD - let the latest technology decide what's the best way to downconvert the delta sigma modulator output? Why hogtie the converter to the transport? Oh, yeah! I get it - we get to sell more players that way... Nope. We get to sell more content that way. It's about protection of content from theft regardless of how effective it might be. That's so stupid (not you Bob, I'm talking about this wishful record company thinking), it has to be the idea of Dilbert's boss. It's like trying to protect a house from break-in by locking only the back door while leaving the front door open. I agree, but that seems to be the state of affairs (copy protection). There are only a handful of expensive players that have a digital audio out (IEEE 1394/firewire) and they have proprietary interfaces with the same vendors' expensive receivers. Apparently the copy protection scheme/vendor implementation must be approved (DVD forum?) before the digital link can be activated. There are a few devices shipping with the firewire port disabled. If and when that vendor is approved they can enable the output via firmware upgrade. Having only analog outputs is a giant step backward. Proprietary digital links is a crummy solution. |
